What can I do besides transplant to get more hair?

I would get a Hair transplant but I do not currently have enough money. Is there anything else I can do to get my hair back or to get more hair?

Dut Maintenance / Only 0.5mg monthly

I know this is old news but not everybody is up to date such as myself. I always knew that maintenance after one yr with dut can be as little as 0.5mg every other day or possibly stretching it 2 times per week. But in this article Dr. Sawaya indicates that patients can use 0.5mg one time per month(?) as maintenance. If thats the case I think that should remove all fear of the terrible and unknown side effects of dut because taking 0.5mg once a month is not bad at all.

Dr. Sawaya's Test Patient Reporting Impressive Results With Dutasteride - The New Hair Loss Medication That Will Soon Eclipse Propecia

One of HairSite's frequent visitors posted in the Dutasteride forum on April 26th, 2002 a certain news article he found in the News4 Jacksonville website (news4jax.com). This news article was dated Feb 18, 2000. In the article, a test patient of Dr. Marty Sawaya's came forward and reported dramatic results in hair growth while participating in a study for a new hair loss medication. Dr. Sawaya of Ocala is one of the nation's most highly respected specialists in the filed of hair loss.

The name of the medication was not disclosed in the News4Jax's article but HairSite's posters were quick to speculate (as usual) that the medication referred to could very likely be Dutasteride.

HairSite has managed to contact the test subject featured in the News4Jax article. For the purpose of this report, we called the test subject Tom. Tom confirmed that he was one of the 35 test subjects participated in Dr. Sawaya's study for Dutasteride several years ago.

Tom was about 33 years old when he began the study. According to Tom, Dutasteride had worked wonders for him. Tom was on the medication for about 8 - 10 months (he does not remember exactly how many months, but according to Tom, definitely at least 6 months and no more than a year) and he went from a Norwood 4 - 5 to a Norwood 2 during that period. His hair loss stopped completely 3 weeks after he began the treatment and he witnessed gradual hair growth throughout the rest of the study. No shedding was reported. First visible signs of regrowth were observed at the back and crown area. The regrowth was particularly dense and thick in the back and crown area, but there was noticeable regrowth along the hairlines as well. Absolutely no side effects were reported.

After Tom was taken off the medication, he was requested to visit Dr. Sawaya's office for blood test and monitoring. It was found that his DHT level had remained low for more than a year after he discontinued taking Dutasteride even though the results tapered off eventually. Dr. Sawaya's office speculated that because of the medication's effectiveness, some patients can possibly go on Dutasteride one pill a week or even stretch as far as one pill per month in the maintenance phase. When Tom was on the medication, he was asked to take one pill per day during the 8 - 10 month period. Tom remembered that he was given the highest dose in the study but forgot exactly how many milligrams exactly. He had not used Propecia, Minoxidil or any other hair loss products prior to or during the study.

Tom also added that another benefit of Dutasteride was that the hair on his back fell off while he was on the medication.

Unfortunately, about a year after Tom stopped using Dutasteride, a majority of the Dutasteride induced regrowth started to fall. When asked if he would go back to Dutasteride again when it becomes available, Tom said he was totally devastated that they took him off the study and that he would absolutely go back to the medication as soon as they become available.

There were about 35 other subjects in the study. Tom indicated that he was not able to get in touch with other test patients and he cautioned that his results may be among the most impressive of all.

Hi, Guys,

I am using Proscar 5 mg from August 2004 til today. I always take a quarter, using my pill splitter.
I think, it was the intention of the pill producer to give the tablet such an awful shape, to make it difficult to split into 4 equal pieces. So the splitting causes pieces of 0,9 mg to 1,5 mg per quarter. So I get no continous equal supply of Finasterid. Does anybody knows, that this will have an influence or not?

Minoxidil Applied on Wet Hair

Some of you know that minoxidil applied to a damp scalp is highly more potent than applying it to a dry scalp. It's prohibited because of the potency that creates side effects. Well.... I applied it to damp hair this morning and let me tell you it was not fun at all. I experienced immediately...

It's almost 8:30pm and I still have the symptoms. I also think it causes a slight insomnia effect because I don't think I'll be sleeping for the next few hours.

Minoxidil will definetly be more effective on a damp scalp. But is it worth it? Not in a million years.

My Crown is Filling in - Only 6 weeks

I don't it is, but my crown is filling in and it did not look pretty. Why the excitement? Because I've only started my regime almost 6 weeks ago. I have the photos (as posted 1 month ago on another site) of what my crown looked like prior to starting my treatment.

Problem I have now is I'm growing hair on my forehead, around my eye brows, and below my eyes like a hair monky. I don't care because I'm waxing them off.

Saw Palmetto

I am a bit of a vitamin freak. I was buying my supplements for the month and I saw some Saw Palmetto. I figured since its good fore the prostate and might be good for my hair I will pick some up. It is not a topical, they are in pill form. Will any of this help with my hair? I am alreayd taking Proscar and Rogaine.

If so how much should I take? Each pill is 540 mg

Will it help with regrowth or just the quality of my existing hair??

New Study - Green Tea Extract Grows Hair!

Green Tea Extract Grows Hair in Vitro and in Vivo

We've all heard about how Asians drink lots of green tea and usually have full heads of hair. Does this mean green tea improves hair growth?

Despite all the positive news about the health benefits of green tea, in my opinion the jury is still out on this one. Surprisingly, not a lot of studies have been done on green tea and hair growth in humans, especially when the green tea is topically applied.

In a recent study about green tea and human hair follicles, Kwon et al. report:

Green tea is a popular worldwide beverage, and its potential beneficial effects such as anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties are believed to be mediated by epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major constituent of polyphenols.

Recently, it was reported that EGCG might be useful in the prevention or treatment of androgenetic alopecia by selectively inhibiting 5alpha-reductase activity. However, no report has been issued to date on the effect of EGCG on human hair growth. This study was undertaken to measure the effect of EGCG on hair growth in vitro and to investigate its effect on human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) in vivo and in vitro.

EGCG promoted hair growth in hair follicles ex vivo culture and the proliferation of cultured DPCs. The growth stimulation of DPCs by EGCG in vitro may be mediated through the upregulations of phosphorylated Erk and Akt and by an increase in the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax ratio. Similar results were also obtained in in vivo dermal papillae of human scalps. Thus, we suggest that EGCG stimulates human hair growth through these dual proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects on DPCs.

In this study, one of the main green tea catechins, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (or ECGC) was used topically in cultured hair follicles, cultured dermal papilla cells, and the scalps of human volunteers.

In cultured hair follicles, the application of a 95% green tea extract more than doubled the length of hair follicles. Hair growth almost tripled. In the cultured skin cells, the extract increased the growth of new cells in a dose-dependent manner.

The authors report that EGCG affects the expressions of Erk, Akt, Bcl-2 and Bax, and suggest that this effect may be the reason behind the results seen in follicle and skin cell cultures.

To see whether similar effects happen in vivo, the authors mixed 10% EGCG in ethanol and applied it directly onto human scalps. Again, significant changes in the expressions were seen, which means that if their theory about these expressions being the cause of hair growth, ECGC works both in vitro and in vivo. The authors conclude that ECGC stimulates hair growth through its proliferative and anti-apoptotic effects, and that ECGC may prolong the anagen stage.

So can you do the same thing at home? It seems so.

To make your own inhuman experiment, you'd need to buy a green tea extract with as much catechins as possible (95% ECGC was used in the study) and mix it with ethanol. All you need to do then is rub it on your head and wait for results.

Pats I don't see a single forum that has a designated forum/section to BHT (body hair transplant). I dont think BHTs should be posted in Hair transplants as it's relatively new and a totally separate topic on its own. If you can set up section specifically for BHT I think it would attract more members and readers, and it would allow us to pin point on BHT results and procedures.

In my experience of treating my hairloss I've found that whenever I would get lax on my daily routine I would suffer more hairloss. Fortunately after being more disciplined my hair would re-thicken most times after several months. I'm not referring to drastic regrowth but getting thin hairs to grow a little thicker and this keeping them from miniaturizing completely.
